The world / six regions

Leonida, region by region.

Rockstar has described six places in the state, and each one has a different idea of what Florida is. A city built on money, an island chain built on boats, a wetland that punishes shortcuts, and a park that rewards slowing down.

Vice CityLeonida KeysGrassriversPort GellhornAmbrosiaMount Kalaga

Leonida is the state that holds the whole game, the way San Andreas held GTA V. Rockstar describes it as a place that runs from Vice City to coastal, industrial, wetland, and rural areas. The name is a nod to Juan Ponce de León, the Spaniard who named Florida. The state seal and the license plates in the trailers parody the real ones.

The six regions are not a menu of biomes. They are a set of arguments about the same state. Vice City says money can buy any problem away. Port Gellhorn says the money left and the problems stayed. Ambrosia says the jobs are real and the company owns the town. Mount Kalaga says the best thing to do is leave the road.

You do not need to visit them in order. The story starts in the Keys, moves through Vice City, and reaches the rest of the state as the conspiracy grows. Free roam is more forgiving. A car, a boat, and a plane cover most of the map, and each region has at least one vehicle that makes more sense than the one you arrived in.

The map page shows where each place sits on a schematic. This page is about what the places are like, what Rockstar has said about them, and what to do when you get there. Where a detail is inference, the text says so.

01 / The city

Vice City

Everything in excess.

Rockstar calls Vice City "the sun and fun capital of America" and says the city has moved on from the 1980s without losing its appetite for money. The skyline is new, the beaches are still the postcard, and the criminal economy runs through both.

The trailers and the Extended Look show Ocean Beach, Washington Beach, and the hotel strip, then turn inland to Little Cuba and the Stockyard. A working port, an international airport, and a stadium district sit within the same city limits. Rooftop pools, basketball courts, and parking garages are part of the street level rather than backdrops.

This is where Jason and Lucia spend most of the opening chapters. It is also the densest part of the map, so expect traffic, police, and a lot of interiors to slow down a straight line between two points.

Leonida Keys

Gateway to paradise.

The Keys are a chain of low islands south of Vice City, linked by a long bridge and a slower idea of time. Rockstar says the dress code is casual and the bars are loaded. It also warns that the water is beautiful and dangerous.

Key Lento is the first named key, and the opening of the story puts Jason and Lucia there. Brian Heder runs a boat yard and marina, which gives the pair a reason to stay near the water. The Extended Look adds kayaking through mangroves and scuba diving on the reef.

If you want to understand how the map is put together, start here. The Keys show the range of movement better than any other region: a car gets you to the bridge, a boat gets you between islands, and a seaplane gets you back to the city.

Grassrivers

Welcome to the wetlands.

Grassrivers is the wet interior: sawgrass, slow channels, mangroves, and enough wildlife to make a wrong turn feel like a bad decision. Rockstar calls it "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown" and says the alligators are the famous attraction, not the deadliest one.

The official screenshots show airboat hunters with a dead gator, a pickup fleeing a police helicopter through shallow water, and alligators at the edge of the frame. The Extended Look adds fanboats and kayaks moving through vegetation at a pace that makes the city feel very far away.

This is the region to visit when you want the map to fight back. Bring a vehicle that can handle water, keep an eye on the bank, and do not assume a shortcut is a road.

Port Gellhorn

Live hard.

Port Gellhorn is a beach town that lost its tourists and kept the signs. Rockstar describes cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls, with an economy fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks.

The Starlet Motel and the Delights cabaret appear in official screenshots. The strip clubs, the racetrack crowd, and the dirt bikes fit the same picture. This is the region furthest from Vice City in mood, even if the drive is not that long.

Rockstar's own line, "jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet," is the best travel advice on the map. The roads are wide and empty, the police are bored, and the off-road routes are more interesting than the highway.

05 / The refinery town

Ambrosia

Keeping Leonida sweet.

Ambrosia is inland industry. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, and Rockstar says the local biker gang provides almost everything else. The town sits in the middle of cane fields, with Lake Leonida close enough to matter.

The imagery is specific: a chapter of bikers in patched vests riding past the Ambrosia County Sheriff's Office, cane fields burning at sunset, refinery stacks behind the smoke. The Ultimate Edition adds shops and a garage here, which suggests the region carries more story weight than a single mission.

It is the least shown of the six regions in the Extended Look. That makes it the biggest unknown for launch, and the first place to drive to if you want to see something the trailers did not spoil.

Mount Kalaga

Wild, wild country.

Mount Kalaga National Park sits against the state's northern border. Rockstar lists hunting, fishing, and off-road trails as the reasons to go, and adds that hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals live in the backwoods away from the government.

The official screenshots show a road cut between red rock walls, a cougar stalking deer at a stream, and a bridge in the distance. The region looks more like the American interior than the Florida postcard, which is the point: Leonida is not only coast.

This is where the game slows down. Hunting and fishing are confirmed activities, the trails are built for dirt bikes and ATVs, and the Ultimate Edition's Dominator Buggy is pitched at "the backwoods of Mount Kalaga and beyond."

Mount Kalaga

How tall is Mount Kalaga in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published a height, a size, or coordinates for Mount Kalaga. The only official description places Mount Kalaga National Park against the state's northern border and names hunting, fishing, off-road trails, and isolated backwoods communities. Any figure in feet or metres is a guess.

Geography sets the scale. Leonida follows Florida's shape, and Florida's highest natural point is Britton Hill at 345 feet (105 m), the lowest state highpoint in the country and lower than the roof of most downtown towers. If the park keeps that scale, Mount Kalaga is a ridge with a long view rather than an alpine climb. That is inference from the real state, not a Rockstar statement.

The official screenshots complicate it. They show a road cut between red rock walls, which is not a Florida landscape. Comparisons to Providence Canyon in Georgia, or to Table Rock, come from screenshot threads and never from official material. Rockstar has not shown a summit or a trail map, so the shape of the peak is still unknown.

The map page pins Mount Kalaga in the north of the community reconstruction. Every position on that schematic is an estimate built on Florida, so the pin shows roughly where the region sits in the state and not a border or a trailhead.

Can you hunt in Mount Kalaga?

Yes. Hunting is one of the activities Rockstar names for Mount Kalaga National Park, alongside fishing and off-road trails. The same description adds hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals who live in the backwoods away from the government, which is as far as the company has gone in describing the people up there.

What hunting looks like in play is unconfirmed. Rockstar has published no licence, bag limit, pelt price, or weapon list, and the Grassrivers screenshots show hunters with a dead alligator without explaining the system behind it. The park screenshots show a cougar stalking deer at a stream, so the animals are there. Whether you can hunt that cougar is unknown.

Fishing sits in the same list and the same state of detail. Rockstar has published no rod list, fish list, or rule about where you can cast, so treat both activities as confirmed and undescribed. Rockstar has also not said whether the park holds campsites, ranger stations, or a wanted system of its own.

Grassrivers

What animals live in Grassrivers?

Alligators are confirmed in Grassrivers. Rockstar calls the region "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown" and says the alligators are the famous attraction rather than the deadliest animal there. The official screenshots add airboat hunters with a dead gator in the shallows.

The full list is unconfirmed. Rockstar described more than 170 species across Leonida in interviews, and that count covers the whole state rather than one wetland. No per-region animal list exists yet, so the table below marks what Rockstar has confirmed for the region and what it has not.

Rockstar says the alligators are not the deadliest animal in Grassrivers and has not said which one is. That line is the only official hint that the wetland holds something worse than the thing you can see.

The systems

What makes the state feel like a state.

Rockstar has described more than scenery. Weather, animals, police, and the vehicle list all change how a region plays.

WildlifeRockstar described more than 170 species to Dazed in September 2026, including alligators, flamingos, pelicans, manatees, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaques.
WeatherLocal showers, persistent puddles, rainbows, and tropical storms. The clouds move across the state instead of switching on above the player.
PoliceOfficers track your vehicle separately from your face and clothes, so changing cars during a chase can break the trail.
MovementCars, boats, jet skis, seaplanes, helicopters, dirt bikes, ATVs, and a kayak. Each region has at least one vehicle that makes more sense than a car.

The weather is the clearest example. Rockstar reworked the cloud system from Red Dead Redemption 2 so showers are local rather than statewide. One district can be dry while rain falls across the bay. Puddles stay after the storm. Rainbows appear when the light is right. Tropical storms and hurricanes reach Leonida, though Rockstar has not said how often or what they do to missions.

Animals are the other system that changes the map. Rockstar described more than 170 species to Dazed in September 2026. Some are native, some are invasive, and some are classed as rare, discoverable, or legendary. The alligators in Grassrivers are the obvious ones. The cougar stalking deer in Mount Kalaga is the one that makes a quiet road feel less quiet.

The police work differently from previous games in one important way. Officers track your vehicle separately from your face and clothes. Changing cars during a chase can break the trail. That makes the vehicle you steal part of the escape plan, not just a way to get from one mission to the next.

First week

One thing to do in each region.

A short list for the first save, before the guides and the checklists take over.

01Vice City

Learn the beach and the airport road first. The city is dense, and the missions will keep bringing you back to the same few blocks.

02Leonida Keys

Take the bridge south and get on the water early. Boats and jet skis are the fastest way to see how the islands connect.

03Grassrivers

Rent or steal an airboat before you go looking for trouble. A normal car is a trap in the shallow water.

04Port Gellhorn

Go at night. The motel signs, the cabaret, and the empty strip malls are the reason the region exists.

05Ambrosia

Drive the cane roads at sunset and look for the refinery. This is the least shown region, so leave time to be surprised.

06Mount Kalaga

Bring an off-road vehicle and a fishing rod. The park is built for slow travel, not a straight line to the next mission.

One warning. The Extended Look spends most of its time in Vice City. Four of the six regions have far less public footage. Ambrosia, Port Gellhorn, and Mount Kalaga are the places where the game can still surprise you, so leave them some room in your first week.

Questions

The park and the wetlands, answered.

How tall is Mount Kalaga?

Rockstar has not published a height, a size, or coordinates. The official description only places Mount Kalaga National Park against the state's northern border and names hunting, fishing, off-road trails, and backwoods communities. Florida's highest natural point, Britton Hill, is 345 feet, which suggests a ridge rather than a mountain, and that is inference from the real state.

Can you hunt in Mount Kalaga?

Yes. Hunting is one of the activities Rockstar names for Mount Kalaga National Park, with fishing and off-road trails. What the hunting involves is unconfirmed: Rockstar has published no weapon list, licence, pelt price, or bag limit for it.

What animals live in Grassrivers?

Alligators are confirmed, and Rockstar calls them the region's famous attraction rather than its deadliest animal. Flamingos, cane toads, green iguanas, feral cats, and rhesus macaques appear in Rockstar's species description for Leonida, but the company has not placed them in one region. No Grassrivers animal list exists.
